How to Create a Captivating Coffee Table Runner
Coffee table runners are versatile accents that add a touch of style and functionality to your living room. Whether you're looking to protect your table from spills or enhance its aesthetic appeal, creating your own runner is a rewarding project.
Essential Materials:- Fabric of your choice (e.g., cotton, linen, velvet)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Scissors
- Needle and thread or sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
1. Determine the Size: Measure your coffee table's length and width. Add 6-12 inches on each side to create overhangs. For a more dramatic effect, add additional fabric.
2. Cut the Fabric: Using your measurements, cut a rectangular piece of fabric twice the length and twice the width of the desired runner. This will allow for folding and creating a hem.
3. Fold the Hem: Fold the raw edges of the fabric inward by about 1/2 inch. Press with an iron to create a crease. Fold the edges in again by another 1/2 inch and sew a double-stitched hem around the entire perimeter.
4. Create the Runner: Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the hemmed edges facing inside. Sew the two long edges together, leaving a small opening in the center for turning. Trim any excess fabric.
5. Turn and Press: Turn the runner right side out through the opening. Use a blunt object to gently push out the corners. Press the runner with an iron to flatten any wrinkles.
6. Embellish (Optional): If desired, add embellishments to personalize your runner. You can use tassels, fringe, embroidery, or appliqué to enhance its style.
Tips for Selecting Fabric:- Consider the style of your living room and choose a fabric that complements it.
- Opt for durable fabrics like cotton, linen, or velvet that can withstand everyday wear.
- If you have pets or children, choose stain-resistant fabrics for easy maintenance.
- For a more textured look, use woven fabrics or fabrics with a pile.
- Ruffle Runner: Create a gathered ruffle around the edges by sewing a strip of fabric to the hem.
- Layered Runner: Use multiple layers of fabric in different colors or patterns to add depth.
- Quilted Runner: Quilt together multiple layers of fabric with batting for a cozy and textured look.
- Spot clean or hand wash your runner using a mild detergent.
- Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals that can damage the fabric.
- Iron the runner on a low setting to remove any wrinkles.
