How to Craft a Basic Table Runner

Elevate your dining table with a charming and functional table runner. Follow this guide to create a basic table runner that adds a touch of elegance to any gathering.

Materials:

  • Fabric of your choice (cotton, linen, burlap)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Fabric scissors
  • Iron and ironing board (optional)
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Instructions:

1. Measure and Cut the Fabric:

Determine the desired length and width of your table runner. Add 2 inches to each side for the seam allowance. Measure and cut the fabric to these dimensions.

2. Hem the Edges:

Fold the raw edges of the fabric over by 1 inch, then fold over again by 1 inch. Iron the hems flat (optional) and sew them in place with a straight stitch.

3. Create a Mitred Corner (Optional):

For a professional finish, create mitred corners. Fold the fabric diagonally so the raw edges align. Measure and mark 1 inch from the top and side edges. Cut along the marks to create a triangle. Fold the triangle down and iron flat. Sew the triangle in place and trim any excess fabric.

4. Join the Sides:

With right sides together, align the side edges of the fabric and pin them in place. Sew a straight stitch along the pinned edge, leaving a 1-inch opening at one end for turning.

5. Turn and Finish:

Turn the table runner right side out through the opening. Use a chopstick or blunt object to push out the corners. Iron the table runner to flatten and finish the seams.

6. Stitch the Opening:

Fold the edges of the opening inward and iron flat. Sew the opening closed using a blind stitch or hand-sewing technique.

Tips:

  • Choose a fabric that complements your table decor.
  • Use a variety of stitches to create different textures.
  • Add embellishments such as fringe, tassels, or embroidery.
  • Experiment with different lengths and widths to create different looks.
  • Wash and iron the table runner after each use to keep it looking its best.

With these simple steps, you can create a beautiful and practical table runner that will add a finishing touch to your table setting.
