How to Make a Simple Quilted Table Runner
A quilted table runner is a beautiful and functional way to add a touch of style to your dining table. It's also a great project for beginners, as it's relatively easy to make and doesn't require any special skills or equipment.
In this tutorial, we'll show you how to make a simple quilted table runner using the beginner-friendly strip piecing technique. This method involves sewing together strips of fabric to create a larger piece of fabric, which is then used to make the table runner.
Materials
- Fabric for the top of the table runner (1 yard of fabric will make a table runner that is approximately 18" x 36")
- Fabric for the backing of the table runner (1 yard of fabric will make a backing that is approximately 18" x 36")
- Batting for the middle of the table runner (1 yard of batting will make a batting that is approximately 18" x 36")
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat (optional)
- Quilting ruler (optional)
Instructions
- Cut the fabric for the top of the table runner into strips. The strips should be 2 1/2" wide and the length will depend on the desired length of the table runner. For a table runner that is approximately 18" x 36", you will need to cut 12 strips of fabric.
- Sew the strips of fabric together to create the top of the table runner. Start by sewing two strips of fabric together, right sides together. Press the seam open. Then, continue sewing the remaining strips of fabric together, pressing each seam open as you go.
- Cut the batting to the same size as the top of the table runner. Place the batting on top of the top of the table runner and smooth it out. Pin the batting to the top of the table runner.
- Cut the backing of the table runner to the same size as the top of the table runner. Place the backing of the table runner on top of the batting and smooth it out. Pin the backing of the table runner to the batting.
- Quilt the table runner. You can quilt the table runner by hand or by machine. If you are quilting by hand, use a needle and thread to sew through all three layers of the table runner. If you are quilting by machine, use a quilting ruler to guide your stitches. Quilt the table runner in any design you like.
- Bind the table runner. Binding the table runner will help to finish the edges and give it a professional look. Cut strips of fabric that are 2 1/2" wide and the length will depend on the perimeter of the table runner. For a table runner that is approximately 18" x 36", you will need to cut 4 strips of fabric.
- Fold one of the strips of fabric in half lengthwise and press it. Then, open the strip of fabric and fold one of the raw edges to the center crease. Press it. Then, fold the other raw edge to the center crease and press it. You should now have a strip of fabric that is folded in thirds.
- Repeat step 7 with the remaining strips of fabric.
- Pin the strips of fabric to the edges of the table runner, right sides together. Sew the strips of fabric to the table runner, using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams open.
- Fold the strips of fabric to the back of the table runner and press them. Sew the strips of fabric to the back of the table runner, using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams open.
- Your quilted table runner is now complete!
